U.S. Strategic command helps Omaha's economic growth

With a wide set of critical missions and global reach, the U.S. Strategic Command is more than just a powerful military force. It's a powerful economic force, too. Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce officials say StratCom, Offutt Air Force Base and related private businesses in 2007 had an estimated $2.2 billion impact on Omaha — representing more than five percent of the metro area's overall economy.

StratCom's wide economic reach was seen on full display at Strategic Space and Defense in October, an annual conference that attracted 2,000 military and defense industry representatives to downtown's Qwest Center Omaha. The conference was initiated by the chamber five years ago as it was seeking to leverage defense contractor interest in StratCom to boost the number of private defense jobs in the Omaha area. Chamber officials say the conference has played a role in the significant growth of such jobs. >>more>>
