USSTRAtcom cyberspace symposium

Cybersecurity is a Priority for Every Business and Educational Institution

Omaha, Neb., April 9, 2010 – The Greater Omaha Chamber today announced its support of and participation in the 2010 U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) Cyberspace Symposium in Omaha, the heart of America’s cyberspace defense. The event, at Qwest Center Omaha Wednesday, May 26, through Thursday, May 27, will foster innovation and collaboration between the private sector and government. The Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) International is the co-sponsor of the event.

Cybersecurity is a priority for our government and the military, but every local business and educational institution, as well as the general public, is affected by cybersecurity on a daily basis. Common domains such as .com, .gov, .mil, .net, .org, .edu, etc. are all vulnerable to threats. Anyone who shops, banks, communicates or works online must be aware of his or her safety.

During the conference, an expected 1,200 attendees, including CEOs, CIOs, university deans, IT professionals and the general public will hear from presenters such as The Honorable William J. Lynn III, Deputy Secretary of Defense; Gen. Kevin P. Chilton, Commander, U.S. Strategic Command; The Honorable Greg Schaffer, Assistant Secretary, Office of Cybersecurity and Communications, National Protection and Programs Directorate, U.S. Department of Homeland Security; and The Honorable Howard Schmidt, White House Cybersecurity Coordinator.

Symposium sessions will include perspectives of senior U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. and Allied government, industry and academia speakers, as well as panels to explore and discuss:
  • Supporting global and regional joint commanders with cyberspace capabilities
  • International perspective
  • Value/Hazards of Internet-based networking and capabilities
  • Developing tomorrow's cyber operator
  • Emerging cybersecurity technologies
  • Critical infrastructure protection
Cybersecurity recommendations resulting from these sessions will be presented to USSTRATCOM leadership for review and possible implementation.

“We are pleased to once again host USSTRATCOM’s Cyberspace Symposium. This event provides Greater Omaha an outstanding venue to showcase our city as a center of excellence for secure cyberspace,” said David G. Brown, president and CEO of the Greater Omaha Chamber. “I encourage Chamber members to attend because the knowledge gained from this symposium is relevant to every business.”

To help welcome symposium attendees to Omaha, the Greater Omaha Economic Development Partnership will be sponsoring an opening-night networking dinner, themed “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” on Wednesday, May 26, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Qwest Center Omaha. The dinner is open to all registered attendees and exhibitors.
